Getting Married

You’ve decided to get married and you are planning your big day. Below are some helpful hints to get through the event without losing your sanity or being sent to the poor house.

Budgeting

As with anything in life, it is important to set a budget for your wedding. You need to go into it knowing what you are able to spend.

You and your future spouse need to agree to what you willing and able to spend on for the big day. Be prepared to make compromises and work together to make sure that the day is great for both of you.

There’s a lot to think about when setting a budget for your wedding. Below is a list of the most common big ticket items to include in your budget:

  • Reception location
  • Food & drinks
  • Gown & tux
  • Rings
  • Invitations
  • Entertainment
  • Transportation
  • Flowers
  • Photography
  • Wedding party gifts
  • Favors
  • Cake

Don’t forget to include any smaller items when figuring out your budget. Though it might be hard, it is important to try to stick to your budget as closely as possible.

Loans

If you’re paying for your own wedding you may be in a situation where you do not have the cash to pay for all of it. There are a few types of loans available that could help you with the expenses.

If you already own a home, consider a home equity loan as they are secured and generally have a much lower interest rate.

Another loan to consider would be a personal loan. The rate is slightly higher than a home equity but is usually fairly reasonable.
Your last resort should be to put the expenses on a credit card. A credit card will have the highest APR and will end up costing you way more than you’ve budgeted.

If you’re planning a wedding and need some help visit your financial institution and they will be able to help figure out what is the right loan for you.

Cost-Saving Tips

There are many ways to save on your wedding and still make it nice. The first and probably easiest way to save... invite fewer people.

You could also cut down on the length of your reception, book in advance and pay cash. You may be able to schedule a different day as well – Saturdays are in high demand, try a Friday evening or Sunday and you could save a good amount.

Try handling some of the things yourself. Whether it’s your save the date cards, invitations or favors, it can save you a ton of money.
